What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a strategy that enables you as an Instagrammer, to receive commission through the marketing of products. Each time a product is being sold as a result of your marketing efforts, you receive a commission. Read more about what affiliate marketing is and how it works in our previous post (link to «What is affiliate marketing?»).
In order to get started, you have to..
Register an account and add your Instagram channel URL (https://www.instagram.com/yourusernamehere/). Make sure to add your channel as «Other», otherwise it will be denied, as you are (most likely) not the owner of Instagrams domain.
Choose with which brands you want to work and apply for their program. Program applications are usually processed within 24 hours, but in some cases, it might take a little longer.
Once your application is processed and you have found a suitable product to promote, retrieve tracking links from our system and add them as part of your Instagram content. The tracking link enables Adtraction to track conversions from your followers and further generate a commission when your marketing has led to a sale.
Adding the link
Using Instagram, tracking links can be added two different places – either in your Instagram bio, or in a story using the swipe up function. Note that your profile has to be verified in order to add links in your Instagram stories.
In order to add a link in your Instagram bio, click «Edit profile» and add the link in the field «Website». By adding the link this way, it becomes clickable.
In order to add a link in your Instagram story, take or upload a photo to your Instagram Story, then click the icon at the top right that looks like a chain. Thereafter, click «+ URL», add your tracking link to the field and click «done». Once your story is ready, hit the «+ Story» at the bottom right of your story.
Shorten the link
We recently introduced a short link generator directly in our system. Create shorter and less overwhelming tracking links by simply choosing «Short link» when retrieving your tracking link. The generated link is ready to use.
How to promote products
If you tend to post content about a specific topic, it is natural to promote related products from an advertiser within the same industry. Find a product you like – maybe one you already have, take a photo, edit it nicely and share it with your followers. In the image description, refer your followers to a tracking link in bio or to your Instagram story.
If you want to engage your followers even more, a tip is to create a «haul», meaning that you show more products from one advertiser. This is normally done using Instagram stories. Instagram feed images can further be successful in combination with hauls. In other words, it is up to you if you want to use only a standard Instagram post to promote, an instagram story, or a combination of the two.
The traditional affiliate model does not include sponsored products. However, you might already own products that are sold by our advertisers. As an example, you might have a favourite beauty product? Check whether our advertisers within health and beauty sell it.
Offers and campaigns
Remember to stay updated on offers and campaigns from the advertisers you promote, and make sure in your account that you have enabled receiving emails from us.
Instagram has opened up for individuals to apply for the verification badge, which again allows for putting links in your Instagram story. According to the Instagram help center, you must be a public figure, celebrity or brand and meet certain account and eligibility requirements.
How to request verification: log in to the account you're requesting a verified badge for. Go to your profile and tap Settings » Account » Request Verification.
We hope these few steps will enable you to get started with affiliate marketing on Instagram. Feel free to drop us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) if there are other things you would like to have included in the guide.
